The WindowsXP boot phase consists of four steps. Step1. The bootloader's initialization NTLDR program will switch the processor from RealMode to 32-bit flat memory mode (32-bitFlatMemoryMode). In real mode, the first 640KB of memory is reserved for MS-DOS, and the remaining memory is used as extended memory, so that WindowsXP cannot use all of the physical memory. 32-bit flat memory mode lets WindowsXP use all of the memory installed on the computer. (32-bit Windows operating systems, by design, only use 2 GB, 64-bit available for 4 GB). Next,NTLDR starts the built-in mini-filesystemdrivers (mini-filesystemdrivers). In this step,NTLDR can recognize each partition formatted with NTFS or FAT file systems for discovering and loading WindowsXP. This step of choosing an operating system is not required on a single operating system computer. If more than one operating system (i.e., multiple operating systems) is installed on the computer and boot.ini is set correctly, the computer will display an operating system option, which is the result of NTLDR reading boot.ini. The operation steps for setting the operating system option are "System Properties" → "Advanced" → "Startup and Fault Recovery", as shown in Figure 13. As shown in 2.
